Caroline Smailes's In Search of Adam is a complete stunner. It's emotionally draining, but absolutely fantastic so far.
It's told in the voice of a 7-year old child, who early in the book crawls in bed with the body of her dead mother, then shortly after is raped by the brother of a trusted neighbor. It's the spirit of the girl that's so compelling, and her desperate search for love just rips the reader's heart to shreds. Her vulnerability is heartbreaking, and though it's very grim, the beauty of the writing buoys it all along.
I haven't finished it yet, but I am absolutely transfixed by this book. I can't believe there are no Amazon reviews yet. This is one of those sleeper books, those diamonds that get overlooked unjustly because they speak more quietly than the current books of the moment.
Have a look at this one, if you get the chance. It's well worth it.

Couldn't agree more! Really good review - you managed to get to the crux of the story so cleanly there.
I cried all the way through this book, openly sobbed on the tube and the train, couldn't stop telling people about it. There are plenty of reviews on the UK amazon site, and I'm hoping that the paperback will reach people, because it's such a powerful story. I'm glad you've found Jude too.
